The goal

Every field on a gift form is a small tax on completion. The goal isn't to collect everything you might someday want. It's to collect the one or two things you'll actually use, and nothing else.

How most brands do it

The instinct is to turn on every optional field "just in case", phone number, every social handle, a long custom question, two consent checkboxes, because it feels free to ask. It isn't. A creator who's just deciding whether to bother filling out a form abandons partway through a form that reads like a job application, and you never see the drop-off because there's no signal for "started but didn't finish."

How experienced teams do it

Ask for exactly what changes what you do next. If you're going to check whether someone posted, you need their handle. That's a real use. If you're going to mail a size chart item, you need size. Real use. A custom question is worth adding only when the answer changes how you handle the order (a content plan, a preferred posting date), not as a generic "tell us about yourself." Consent checkboxes (a second consent, marketing opt-in) should only appear when you actually intend to use what they unlock; an unused opt-in checkbox is friction with no upside.

Do it in Seed

  1. Open the campaign's Form fields step (creation) or tab (editor), and show its full options if they're collapsed.
  2. Only type into Question if the answer will actually change what you do with the order, for example "What's your posting plan?" It's left off the form until you type something here. Turn on Required only if you truly can't proceed without an answer.
  3. Add Second consent. Checkbox text only if you have a specific use for it (separate from your Terms & conditions), for example, usage rights for paid ads.
  4. Add Marketing emails opt-in only if you'll actually email this list. A creator who checks it is subscribed to marketing emails in Shopify, don't collect consent you won't use.
  5. Preview the form on the right and count the fields as a creator would, if it feels long, cut something before sharing the link.

Expert checklist

  • Every field on is one you'll actually act on, not "just in case."
  • A custom question, if used, asks for something that changes what happens next.
  • Consent checkboxes only appear when there's a real, specific use for what they unlock.
  • You've previewed the finished form and counted the fields, not just added them one at a time.
