# Shopify Sidekick Apps: What They Can and Cannot Do

Can Shopify Sidekick do influencer marketing? What Sidekick app extensions can read and do, and what they can't, with Seed's gifting tools as the example.

Shopify Sidekick cannot do influencer marketing on its own, but apps can teach it. A Sidekick app extension lets an installed app give Sidekick read-only tools that answer questions from the app's data, or an action that opens a specific screen with values prefilled. Sidekick can look things up and point you to the right place. It cannot save changes for you, because Shopify requires your own click.

I am writing this from the point of view of someone who built one. Seed is a Shopify app for sending free product to creators, and it shipped Sidekick support on 28 September 2026. The cleanest way to explain the boundaries is to show where Seed's integration sits inside them. The practical version is in [how to use Shopify Sidekick for influencer gifting](https://www.seedinfluencers.com/blog/shopify-sidekick-influencer-gifting).

## Two kinds of Sidekick app extension

| | Data extension | Action extension |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it does | Gives Sidekick tools that read the app's data | Lets Sidekick open a specific screen in the app, prefilled |
| Changes anything? | No, read-only in Seed's case | No. It opens a screen. You confirm |
| Example in Seed | Gifts sent, posted rate, views, daily trends, recent creator submissions, per-creator links | "Create a gifting campaign" |
| You do | Ask a question in plain words | Answer two questions, then review and click Create |

That is the whole model. Everything an app does through Sidekick is either a lookup or a handoff to a screen.

## What a data extension does

A data extension publishes tools. Each has a name, a description Sidekick reads to decide when to use it, and a set of inputs such as a date range. When you ask a question, Sidekick picks the tool, fills in the inputs from your words, and calls it. The tool runs against your own store and returns data, and Sidekick turns that into a reply.

Seed publishes five tools. Gifting stats covers campaigns, gifts sent and gifts shipped for any date range. Post performance covers how many gifted creators posted and the views, likes and comments across Instagram and TikTok. View trends gives views gained per day, up to the last 90 days. Creator submissions lists recent creators who filled in an address and whether it became a draft order or shipped. Gifting link search finds per-creator single-use links by handle, campaign or status.

All five are read-only. Asking cannot cancel an order or change a campaign. Part of why that is useful: you can ask loosely and repeatedly without worrying about what a misread request might do. The prompts that work are in [asking Sidekick how your gifting is doing](https://www.seedinfluencers.com/blog/ask-shopify-sidekick-gifting-results).

## What an action extension does

An action extension declares something Sidekick can start for you, and where in the app it goes. Seed's declares "create a campaign". When you ask, Sidekick asks two questions, which products and how many per order, and opens Seed's create-campaign screen in your Shopify admin with those answers filled in.

Then it stops. Sidekick does not press Create. Shopify forbids silent commits from Sidekick actions, so there is always a human click between your request and a saved change. In Seed's case that click also protects you from sending free stock out under the wrong settings. The step-by-step is in [creating a gifting campaign with Shopify Sidekick](https://www.seedinfluencers.com/blog/create-gifting-campaign-with-shopify-sidekick).

## What Sidekick apps cannot do

These limits come from how the extensions are built, and from what Seed chose to publish.

- They cannot commit a change without your confirmation. The click is Shopify's rule.
- They cannot do what the app did not publish. Seed's Sidekick cannot edit, cancel or approve anything, and it cannot run corporate gifting.
- They cannot see another app's data. Each tool answers from its own app and your own shop.
- They cannot be assumed to exist. Each app decides whether to publish extensions, so a missing capability can simply mean the app has not built it.
- They can briefly look missing. After an app adds or updates a tool, Sidekick can say "tool not found" for a few minutes. Open a fresh chat to fix it.

Some of this is a good constraint. If an app could save changes straight from a chat, a vague sentence could set off real orders. I would rather the click exist.

## So, can Sidekick do influencer marketing?

It depends what you mean by influencer marketing, and the honest answer splits into jobs. For the operations of gifting, meaning how many gifts went out, who posted and how views are growing, yes, once an app like Seed gives it the tools. For starting a gifting campaign, partly: Sidekick opens the screen and you finish it.

For the front half of influencer marketing, no. Sidekick does not give you a creator database, rank creators, send outreach, negotiate rates, manage contracts or pay anyone. Seed does not do those either. It is a gifting operations tool, and the people who shop for it already have creators in mind. If you are still finding creators, [finding creators versus running gifting operations](https://www.seedinfluencers.com/blog/influencer-discovery-tools-vs-gifting-operations-tools) explains the split, and [how to find creators to gift products to](https://www.seedinfluencers.com/blog/how-to-find-creators-to-gift-products-to) covers the finding.

## What to check before relying on any Sidekick app

- Does the app say which tools it publishes? Vague "works with Sidekick" claims tell you little.
- Are the tools read-only, or do any change data? Seed's five are read-only.
- Does the action hand you a screen to confirm, or does it claim to have done something? Be wary of the second.
- Does Shopify's own documentation list your plan, country and language as supported? I will not claim that for you, because it is Shopify's to state.

## Who this is not for

If you run a handful of gifts a month, the app's own screens are plenty and Sidekick adds little. If you want an AI that finds, pitches and pays creators, a Sidekick app extension is not that, and neither is Seed. If gifting operations is the job, Seed is on the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/influencer-form), with plans on the [pricing page](https://www.seedinfluencers.com/pricing).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Shopify Sidekick do influencer marketing?

Not by itself. Sidekick can use tools that installed apps give it. With Seed installed, it can report on influencer gifting and open a prefilled create-campaign screen. It does not find creators, negotiate rates or pay anyone, and it does not save changes without you.

### What is a Sidekick app extension?

A small piece an app publishes so Sidekick can use it. A data extension gives Sidekick read-only tools that answer questions from the app's data. An action extension lets Sidekick send you to a specific screen in the app, with values filled in.

### Can Sidekick make changes inside an app on its own?

No. Shopify does not allow Sidekick actions to commit changes silently. Sidekick can take you to the right screen with values prefilled, and you confirm with your own click.

### Are Sidekick's app tools safe to use with my store data?

Seed's tools run with your Shopify login and are scoped to your own shop. All five are read-only, so asking cannot change anything. Check each app's own documentation for how it handles data.

### How do I know which apps work with Sidekick?

Each app decides whether to publish extensions, so check the app's listing or help pages. Seed's integration covers gifting stats, post performance, view trends, creator submissions, per-creator links and creating a campaign.

### Does Sidekick replace the app's own screens?

No. Sidekick is a faster way to ask a question or start a task. Editing, approving, cancelling and anything involving judgement still happens inside the app.
